Today is a day we remember the anniversary of the worst attacks on US soil...just eight short years ago. Looking at ground zero now, someone unaware of the attacks would never know the devastation that happened there, and the devastation that still touches the lives of so many loved ones of the victims. I am told there is a fountain, a cross, and several other small 'sights' put in place to show respect until a proper tribute could be raised to the victims, the hero's and the country.
I remember thinking that day how hard it was to imagine a day when I wouldn't be sad anymore. I can remember thinking that the estimates that it would take decades to remove all the rubble and rebuild sounded reasonable and maybe even too ambitious. It was unquestionably some very dark days for America.
Then I was watching the 700 Club today, and they were taking a slightly different bent to the day. They were remembering all the good that came from this tragedy. They were sharing the stories of miraculous moments, and the lives that were saved, that probably shouldn't have been spared if you were looking at it from an odds-maker's perspective. Many people shared their stories of faith and hope, and the wonderful mercies God showed them in what our enemies intended to end us.
I was struck by the fact that people from all walks of life, all creeds came together in a most unusual way, laid down their differences and showed why we are so blessed as a nation. It is not because of our wealth or power, but the people of this country, and their God who make her great. In those bleak days God allowed many miracles to take place, and a transformation of our national psyche, so that for a few brief months we were truly brothers and sisters united in one common goal...to heal the hurting, and protect those who couldn't protect themselves.
I imagine that someday heaven will be all the best parts of 911 without the unspeakable horrors. I can't wait!
